Julia Jalnasow was born 1987 in the former GDR. After graduating highschool in 2007 she started working as a projectionist and camera assistent in Munich. Between 2008 and 2014 she studied cinematography at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg as well as at the la Fémis in Paris. In 2012 she started a one year round the world trip. In 2014 she finished her studies with a diploma. Since then she shot several documentaries and fictional movies around the world wich were screened at festivals worldwirde. 2014 she won the Michael Ballhaus Cameraprize, in 2016 the prize for best cinematography at the IFFF Cologne and in 2017 an international Emmy for "the braun family". She lives in Leipzig.
